Hi I did think again about Berlin 2011 Fast competitive (sunday) tourney of individuals and coming with system that could fit all goals of organizers and players SKAcz (document version 20110309a) Here list of goals : 1. to have most strongest players in tourney 2. to determine with solid validity the winner 3. to see most interresting games among strongest players (and minimalize forcing much stronger players partner much weaker) 4. to test new alternative time control and get some experience from it 5. system has to allow play as much games as possible without losing many time by organization and moving places, so simplicity preffered 6. tourney has to be long about 3hours 7. to motivate players make as strong teams for saturday tourney as possible and also based on assumption, that peoples do it. Here is the system for bughouse chess tournament with changing partners (Lets call him "Final5"): Time control: (select one from this) 10s +2s bronstein, 1min +1s bronstein, 1min + 1s inc Description : 1. bronstein 2s for move with 10s reserve (time used over 2s will be taken from reserve) advantage : still very fast, but everybody is able make move in 2s, much less (10s only) sitting than in 3min per game and always win better position 2. bronstein 1s + 1minute reserve (minimal bronstein influence, but removes hand races (to try make (pre)move on opponent time meanwhile opp moving hand from clocks to board), a bit decreased flagging (often is possible to move in 1s but not always) 3. 1 minute + 1s inc (hand races still in game, but decreased flagging in last seconds - few fast moves near clocks and then time accumulated can be used for win on position) 1. Get order number of players : every player will get order number based on previous saturday team tourney, players of team who won get numbers 1-2, second 3-4, etc. Randomly is determined who from team get higher number and who lower. If in tourney wish play somebody who didnt played saturday the chief of tourney can determine his order, but is recommended not change the order of top 16 players without some agreement about it. Recommended is use order from previous year tourney plus one or three for example. 2. Tables, places for playing will be signed from 1 to N (N = number of participants divided 4) where 1 is best table, where sits players with order 1-4. On seconds table sits players with orders 5-8, etc. ... 3. Every player will get personal "score-recorder" = paper for his own results with his name and Order number. Will look like : ------------------------------------ ( 1 ) Nils Grandelius, SWE ------------------------------------ Table 1. 2. 3. 4. Sum --------------------------------- Round 1 | | | | | _________________________________ Round 2 | | | | | _________________________________ Round 3 | | | | | _________________________________ Round 4 | | | | | _________________________________ Round 5 | | | | | _________________________________ Round 6 | | | | | _________________________________ Round 7 | | | | | _________________________________ Round 8 | | | | | _________________________________ Finale Table ____ P__ Results F1. F2. F3. F4. F5. __________________________ | | | | | __________________________ Order in finale ____ ----------------------------------- Order in TOURNEY ____ ----------------------------------- Note : personal "score-recorder" can be replaced by list of paper on every table with history of results in each round. And now simple system : In every basic round the players play 4 games each with each (w=white, b=black) P1w + P2b vs P3b + P4w P1b + P3w vs P2w + P4b P1w + P4b vs P2b + P3w Where P1 is the player with lowest order number on table, P2 with second lowest etc... (if on table are players 14,21,20,30 then 14 is P1, 21 is P2, etc.) If here is less than 4 players on table simul bughouse is played (player without partner plays on both boards). After every game player P1 on table will write to every score-recorder 1,0 or 0.5 points based on game results, and while writting he sits on his place, meanwhile others changing places to have right partner for next game. After every basic round the player who scored fewest points is going to table with closest higher number and player with most points is going to table with closest lower number. (Of course best from table 1 and worst from last table are staying on same table). If more players scored same number of points, then as second criterion is taken table player was in previous round (if same the pre previous etc.) where lower table counts as better. As the last criterion if all previous are same is sum of points and then random number. After all basic rounds are finished, is determined who going into finale. Into final group going best 5 players determined this way : First 3 (points in last round) from table 1. First (points in last round) from table 2. Finale player number 5 will be determined from 4. (points in last round) player on table 1 and 2. (pints last round)player on table 2 based on this criterions : 1. Who was more times on table 1 3. Who made more points. 4. If all criterions are same then player who played in last round on table 1 go to the finale. (Same way can be determined from rest of players final groups for players 6-10, 11-15 etc. if needed finale B and c be organized) In finale plays 5 players using system everybody with everybody vs everybody. (P1,P3,P4,P5) P1w + P3b vs P4b + P5w P1b + P4w vs P3w + P5b P1w + P5b vs P3b + P4w (P2,P3,P4,P5) P2w + P3b vs P4b + P5w P2b + P4w vs P3w + P5b P2w + P5b vs P3b + P4w (P1,P2,P4,P5) P1b + P2w vs P4w + P5b P1w + P4b vs P2b + P5w P1b + P5w vs P2w + P4b (P1,P2,P3,P5) P1b + P2w vs P3w + P5b P1w + P3b vs P2b + P5w P1b + P5w vs P2w + P3b (P1,P2,P3,P4) P1w + P2b vs P3b + P4w P1b + P3w vs P2w + P4b P1w + P4b vs P2b + P3w Who made most points is winner of tourney. (If more players has same number of points then is played among them 1 game more. Player Px where x is highest number selecting partner for this games from finalists first) PS. the tourney can be shorter a bit or longer, number of basic rounds can be decreased a bit or increased by any number
